Boston English-Japanese Academic Meetups
Mission Statement
To provide a friendly and structured environment where students will help each other work towards his/her language goals (English or Japanese).
Suggested Syllabus and Goals for students
- At the first academic meetup, each student will submit a statement of their personal goals. They will then develop a plan to meet those objectives that works for their level and time commitment.
Areas of Study
- Vocabulary / Kanji / Spelling
- We encourage each student to have their own vocabulary index cards to exchange with classmates to quiz each other or play games in small groups.
- Grammar
- As a group, the students will create a list of grammar concepts that they would like to review or learn.
- The students will rotate to prepare a grammatical concept for each session.
- Advanced English learners will be using the TOEFL books
- Reading Comprehension
- The students will choose the reading exercises that best matches their ability and interests.
- Advanced students will read newspapers and explain an article to their Japanese-English partner. They will also be given topics to 'debate' and state their opinions.
- Intermediate students will read short stories from various elementary grade levels (K-6). They will work with their partner to talk about what they read and what they feel about it.
- Beginning students who are enrolled in a language course are encouraged to bring their coursework for review.
- Speaking
- We will use each reading comprehension and grammar exercise as an opportunity to speak.
- Students may be asked to make a presentation or skit for the class.
- Test Taking
- Because many students are studying for a specific test, we may use exercises from some of the common test booklets.
- TOEFL
- JLPT
- SAT
Homework
Homework is generally self-assigned dependingon how ambitious your goals are. However, in order to keep some consistency in the class, we ask each student to have:
- Vocabulary index cards
- Your own reading material
- A journal
Academic Resource Library
The Academic Resource Library is a compilation of study materials prepared by students for students. We would like to ask each student to contribute to the library by making a copy of their study material. This may include:
- Vocabulary lists
- Index cards
- Reading material
- Etc.
